“Cloud computing” is a new term for a service that’s been around for years. The “cloud” is simply the Internet (because the Internet looks like a cloud in computer network diagrams), and the “computing” refers to applications that are accessed from a web browser with data stored on a server. Common examples are Salesforce.com, Microsoft's Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS) and Gmail.
Thanks to cloud computing, you may not need to buy and support your own network infrastructure.
